How do you keep concrete from sticking to a mixer

Use Release Agents:

Apply a release agent or concrete form release compound to the inside of the mixer drum before adding concrete. This helps create a barrier that reduces the adhesion of the concrete to the drum's surface.

Common release agents include commercially available products like form oil, diesel fuel, vegetable oil, or even non-stick cooking spray.

Clean the Mixer Drum:

Make sure the mixer drum is clean and free from any hardened concrete or residue from previous mixes. Even small remnants of old concrete can contribute to sticking.

Pre-Wet the Mixer:

Before adding fresh concrete, pre-wet the interior of the mixer drum with water. This can help create a thin layer of moisture that reduces adhesion.

Properly Mix the Concrete:

Ensure that the concrete mix has the correct water-to-cement ratio and workability. Overly wet or excessively dry mixes can increase the likelihood of sticking.

Follow proper concrete mix proportions and avoid adding too much water during mixing.

Add Aggregates First:

When loading the mixer, start by adding aggregates (sand and gravel) first, followed by cement and then water. This order can help reduce the chances of cement clumping and sticking to the drum.

Clean Mixer After Use:

After each use, thoroughly clean the mixer drum to remove any residual concrete. Use a pressure washer, wire brush, or other suitable cleaning methods to ensure a clean drum surface.

Use Plastic Liners (Optional):

Some concrete mixers come with removable plastic liners for the drum. These liners can help prevent concrete from sticking to the metal surface. Consider using liners if available.

Regular Maintenance:

Keep the mixer in good working condition by performing regular maintenance. Inspect and lubricate the drum's interior and other moving parts as needed.

Proper Mixing Time:

Avoid excessive mixing times, which can lead to the concrete drying and adhering to the drum. Mix the concrete for the recommended duration and no longer.

Monitor Mix Temperature:

Extremely hot or cold weather can affect the concrete's behavior and the sticking potential. Take temperature-related precautions as needed.

By following these practices and using release agents when appropriate, you can reduce the likelihood of concrete sticking to the mixer drum and ensure a smoother mixing process.
