What happens when a high-boom wet spraying machine equipped with a small air compressor

When a high-boom wet spraying (shotcrete) machine is equipped with a small or undersized air compressor, several practical problems usually occur during operation:

1. Poor accelerator atomization
Wet shotcrete relies on compressed air to atomize and evenly mix the accelerator at the nozzle.

A small compressor cannot provide enough air pressure or airflow, leading to uneven accelerator mixing.

Result: unstable setting time, weak early strength, or local rebound.

2. Reduced spraying quality
Insufficient air volume causes:
Weak spray force
Poor concrete adhesion to the rock surface
Increased sagging and falling of concrete
This is especially serious for vaults, high tunnel crowns, and steep slopes, where high spray energy is required.

3. Increased rebound rate
Low air pressure means the concrete cannot be properly compacted against the surface.
Rebound rate increases, causing:
Material waste
Higher construction cost
Poor surface flatness

4. Limited spraying distance and height
High-boom machines are designed for long reach and high elevation spraying.
A small compressor limits:
Effective spraying distance
Ability to spray thick layers in one pass
Operators may need multiple passes, reducing efficiency.

5. Unstable operation and frequent interruptions
The compressor may run continuously at full load, causing:
Overheating
Pressure fluctuation
Frequent shutdowns
This affects construction continuity and equipment lifespan.

6. Mismatch with high-boom advantages
High-boom wet spraying machines are meant for large sections, high slopes, and fast support.
A small air compressor becomes the bottleneck, meaning the machine cannot exert its designed efficiency.
